CanCon 2012 Wrapup

What a great con. Really enjoyed being able to wander around for two days enjoying the stalls and watching games and trying the games library, and then having the intensive 6 game Sunday comp.
The game library is a fantastic idea. Being able to sample from such a huge collection of great boardgames is a cool way to spend a day.

DBA last game

Ok, this one I remember :) Against a Later Hoplites army, the big block of psiloi supported spear was initially daunting, but then I noticed something. A very juicy looking block of three light horse sitting out on my left. He's defending and won't be able to do much to support them out there. A plan forms. I decide to charge to those a quick as I can while holding up and denying contact with the spear block. So I deploy all my mounted it in one long line on my left. The few foot lurk in the scrub on the right, not really intending to come out at all. The cav scoot out ahead towards the enemy light horse, while my light horse charge forward to get in the face of the spear block. My opponent has some hideously low pip rolls, so the poor light horse are going to get caught, and the spears are unable to manoeuvre fast enough to help them. Two rounds of 5 cav including a general are all the light horse can weather and then the cav are charging towards the camp. On the right the Hoplite spear block is now tangling with some cav and the elephant. With 3 elements claimed, the camp in my sights and the Hoplites surrounded I'm feeling good (and quietly trying to decide if I wait for the assault on the camp or grab another element). Going for the element seemed more honest, so I ganged up on a flank and took it down. A memorable game where I not only had a clear plan right from deployment, but also actually pulled it off. Huzzah!

DBA game 5

Ok, let's at least drag this one out a bit longer...

Against one JD, one of the locals and no slouch with the dice. Running the Medieval Germans.

Must be fatigue, or perhaps just gamer psychology that we don't remember the details of our losses... For loose I did, but I don't remember how now.

I did cause one casualty though, so got a 2-8 from it.

DBA Game 4

After lunch and a short wander around the merchants, it was 'bob to the top time'. So I drew up against the eventual recipient of 2nd place.

Medieval Polish, another Cav heavy army.

I was attacking and therefore he was able to switch the matchups away from my Elephant. But it hardly mattered...
On my right flank, where I thought I was going to be fairly strong with Cav and the LH against Cav it was over in just a few rolls. 6-1s and the ensuing overlaps just slaughtered me on the spot. Game over 1-8.

All of about 15 minutes, if that.
